ABINGDON ARCHAEOLOGICAL GEOPHYSICS

ORGANISATION

PEOPLE

Like almost all geophysics organisations, we have to expand and contract as the workload varies. Roger and Sally Ainslie take part in most surveys and Chris Oatley and others also help when needed. On many surveys the organisation commissioning the survey also provides helpers both to reduce costs and to enable their personnel to gain experience of the methodology.

Roger Ainslie qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in the 1970's and spent many years managing City centre properties for the Council in Oxford. He has been interested in archaeology since the 1960's he has carried out much fieldwork on sites of all periods.

Finding that excavating the wrong parts of sites was a waste of effort, he decided to do the geophysics parts of the archaeology course at Bradford University, became an Associate of the Institute of Field Archaeologists, and carries out geophysical surveys.

EXPERIENCE

We have been doing resistivity since 2002 and magnetometery on our own account since March 2004. Before this Roger Ainslie worked with Alister Bartlett on his larger geophysical surveys, which he continues to do on an occasional basis.

So far we have worked for the Phoenix Archaeology group, the Northmoor Trust, Earthsound Geophysics, John Moore Heritage Services, Edinburgh University and several individuals and groups who have needed assistance with their projects.
