ABINGDON ARCHAEOLOGICAL GEOPHYSICS

SWEDEN

In 2005 we surveyed a site in southern Sweden for Dr A Sanmark of Uppsala University.

This showed indifferent magnetometry results whilst the areas surveyed with resistivity showed a different picture and shows the barrow which was very apparent as a standing monument.

One would have expected magnetometry to have located a barrow ditch if there was one, but as there is no clear ditch even in the resistivity, one must consider the possibility that this mound had no definite ditch.

Whilst claiming no expertise in soil structures it could be that acid soils under coniferous woodland may leach iron from the upper levels of the soil and redeposit it lower down. This could affect the magnetometry results.
