ABINGDON ARCHAEOLOGICAL GEOPHYSICS

                            TAPLOW

This survey for Oxford Archaeology was not one of the most successful. The flinty plateau gravel was not the best of soils for magnetometery but the main problem was the amount of modern contamination in the area. There are metal spikes, a pipeline and a track surfaced with igneous stone chippings. This is unfortunately often the case on sites near houses and modern settlements.

We did however find the hillfort ditch we were looking for - third square down the left hand side - and resistivity should be able to start from that feature and expand it into areas where it could not be detected with magnetometery.
